Canteen/Porsche Club Social Run

We received late notice, but we heard that this event was on at the Old Police Driving complex on the Sutton Road. We made a few calls, and found out that we were welcome to attend the Porsche Club event.

Anyways, 9:30am, we met at McDonalds Queanbeyan, where the service was unusually McSlow. Some local police officers checked over the cars on their brekky break, impressed by the cars we had in attendance.

We pushed off at 9:45am for a supply of cold drinks, prior to moving on to Sutton Road.

When we arrived, there were heaps of Porsches, easily 40 cars. We squeezed in up the end, paid our $5.00 donation to Canteen, raised the banner, and settled for the day. The rana's managed to pull their fair share of interest, amongst the line up of Porsches, oh and the one Ferrari. Laurie managed to get the attention of Jim Richards for photos, and to sign his car, alongside his Peter Brock signatures. Jim in his Targa Tasmania Porsche was clocking 203km/h at the end of the straight. Other cars taking the kids around included a black Carerra, the Disco Police Car, and a silver unmarked police car. The silver car also taking passengers for trips around the skid pan.

We hung around till about mid-day, as it was becoming pretty clear that we weren't going to get a look in on the track, or the skid pan, which wasn't surprising, after all we were attending as guests at a Porsche Club function. We'd seen Jim Richards, got a few snaps and signatures, so we got what we wanted from the day, along with helping out Canteen.

We decided to grab a bite to eat at the local Maccas again (still McSlow), prior to heading up to Googong Dam.

We had a look at the picnic area below the dam, the cascades, and then the dam itself. Googong Dam was pretty empty.

Returning home, we noticed that a Holden Dealer Team HK Monaro with a 307 Chev block that we passed on the way in was still broken down on the side of the road. We stopped to offer assistance. The car was participating in a South Coast Run that started in Mittagong on Saturday. It was looking pretty chronic, with discussion of broken rockers or valves, so we headed off, while Laurie stayed behind. I found the car in his shed later that night when I went to pick up the drinks for the BBQ! A fine specimen of a Monaro it was too! The final verdict was dirty fuel, picked up from the Williamsdale servo. The car will be trucked back to Moruya during the week, undoubtedly for a thorough clean of the fuel system.

The group dispersed, with Amanda & Mike, Trevor, and Pat, continuing on to check out the facilities at Weston Park, for the pending BBQ next week, and Trevor's pad.

Maybe not the run that we expected it to be, but then again it's nice to know that when someone is interested in attending something, that we can ring around and organise some other members with like interests, and attend as a group. It was also good that we could offer assistance to a fellow motoring enthusiast, in finding a home for the night for the broken down HK. The old Driver Training Track, may even feature as our own event at some time in the future, watch this space!
